Open MRI

Philipa Panorama open MRI scanner
For patients who suffer from claustrophobia, being placed in a narrow tunnel can be very unpleasant, especially with the noise of the MRI scanning process itself.

Also as people are becoming become larger, some patients are simply too large or obese to fit into a conventional MRI scanner.
The basic technology of open MRI is similar to that of a traditional closed bore MRI but the magnet does not completely surround you and there is more space around your body.

For some conditions such as sports injuries it is necessary to scan parts of the body e.g. the knee or shoulder in the position where the pain occurs.  This is not always possible within the confines of a conventional scanner, so it can mean that patients have to undergo exploratory surgery to identify the cause of their problem.
For large or claustrophobic patients
MHL promotes non-invasive diagnostic amd therapeutic products and services, so we are delighted to include open MRI, which can reduce the need for surgery.

Other advantages of open MRI
Joint motion studies are not possible in tunnel (closed loop) type machines.

Open MRI is also the technology of choice for the identification and diagnosis of a wide range of head injuries and neurological disorders where easy access to patients during the scanning procedure is an advantage.
Open MRI allows the body to be scanned in a much wider range of positions, so can avoid the need for exploratory surgery.
MHL currently features the following providers of open MRI
